Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the attitude of nursing students of University toward mental illness.

Method: A total 340 nursing students were recruited from 2 Universities. Data were collected from May to June, 2014, and analyzed with SPSS 18.0.

Result: ASMI were 91.19 (range: 30-120, SD=9.31). Subscales that stereotyping was 32.74 (range: 11-44, SD=4.72), optimism was 19.35 (range: 6-24, SD=2.67), coping was 24.44 (range: 7-28, SD=2.75), and understanding was 14.65 (range: 6-24, SD=3.00). Statistically significant main effects were found for age (F=3.933, p<.000), grade (F=6.649, p<.000), reason for applying to nursing science (F=2.292, p=.045), satisfaction with nursing science(F=4.786, p=.009) and satisfaction with clinical placement in the mental health ward (F-3.776, p=.027) on ASMI.

Conclusion: The finding is that nursing students have a positive attitude towards people with mental illness. It needs appropriate programs for educations to improve a more positive nursing student attitude towards mental illness
